What to Ask Before Your First Facial

Nine calm, useful questions that make a first appointment feel easier.

A first facial can feel like stepping into someone else’s routine. A few good questions turn it into a conversation, and help you choose a treatment that suits your skin rather than a menu.

1. What exactly is included?

Facials with similar names can differ a lot between providers. Ask which steps are part of the session and which are optional.

2. Who will be treating me?

It is reasonable to ask about the person’s training and whether they hold the licence required where you live.

3. Which products will you use?

If you have sensitive skin or allergies, ask for product names and whether a patch test makes sense.

4. Should I stop anything beforehand?

Some providers suggest pausing strong actives, such as retinoids or exfoliating acids, before certain treatments. Ask what applies to you.

5. What might I feel during the session?

Knowing what to expect, such as warmth, cool masks or a little pressure during massage, makes it easier to relax and speak up.

6. What should I do afterwards?

Ask about aftercare, sunscreen and when you can return to your usual routine.

7. Is there anything that makes this unsuitable for me?

Share medicines, recent treatments and skin conditions. A careful provider will ask too.

8. How should my skin honestly feel afterwards?

Ask what is normal straight after the session and in the following days, such as temporary redness, and what would be worth mentioning before you leave.

9. Can I take time to decide?

Always. A good provider answers all of these plainly, before you commit to anything, and leaves room for saying “not today”.

The best first appointment is the one where you leave understanding exactly what happened, and why.
