Understanding a Professional Facial, Step by Step

From cleanse to finish: the reasoning behind each stage of a classic facial.

A professional facial follows a rhythm. Each step prepares the skin for the next, and the provider adjusts the sequence based on what they see. Here is the usual order, and why it matters.

Cleanse

The first cleanse lifts make-up and sunscreen; a second cleanse reaches the skin itself. It also gives the provider a first feel for your skin.

Look closely

Under bright light, often with magnification, the provider notes texture, oil, dryness and sensitivity. This shapes the rest of the session.

Exfoliate, gently

A scrub, enzyme or mild acid product may be used to loosen dead surface cells. The aim is smoothness, not stripping.

Soften and, if suitable, extract

Warm towels or steam can soften the skin. Extractions are optional and should only be done by a trained professional, with your agreement.

Massage

Facial massage is often the part people remember most. It is about comfort and relaxation, and the pressure can be adjusted.

Mask and finish

A mask chosen for your skin is followed by serum, moisturiser and, during the day, sunscreen.

A good facial is a conversation with your skin, and with the person caring for it.
